49ers re-sign Bakhtiari

SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers filled one of their two open roster spots on Wednesday, re-signing outside linebacker Eric Bakhtiari, who appeared in three games with the 49ers earlier this season.

The 49ers will likely make the other roster move later in the week. Two roster spots were vacated when the 49ers suspended disgruntled running back Brandon Jacobs for the final three games of the regular season and they placed defensive lineman/tight end Demarcus Dobbs in injured reserve with a knee injury.

Dobbs was a big contributor on special teams, so they need to replace him on their active, 46-man game day roster. Bakhtiari plays special teams. He will likely compete with members of the team's practice squad, such as safety Michael Thomas and linebacker Alex Hoffman-Ellis, to be active on Sunday to replace Dobbs.

The 49ers will not need to activate another defensive lineman to replace the depth Dobbs supplied. The 49ers already suit up two backup linemen -- Ricky Jean-Francois and Will Tukuafu -- behind starters Justin Smith, Ray McDonald and Isaac Sopoaga.
