SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers signed wide receiver Brandon Carswell to a two-year contract on Wednesday.
Carswell participated in the 49ers' rookie camp last month on a tryout basis. He was particularly impressive fielding punts. He was in camp with the Raiders last year and caught three passes for 36 yards in the exhibition season.
The 49ers released veteran tight end Cameron Morrah to make room on the 90-man roster for Carswell. Morrah, who played three seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, missed practice time last week due to a hamstring strain. He participated in Tuesday's practice.
A native of nearby Milpitas, Carswell signed with the Raiders last year as an undrafted rookie. He appeared in 45 games in his college career at USC. He had 40 receptions for 386 yards and two touchdowns.
