Cincinnati Bengals free agent Dan Skuta, an inside linebacker and special teams player, is visiting the 49ers on Thursday.
Skuta, a four-year veteran from Grand Valley State, signed with the Bengals as an undrafted rookie in 2009. He announced on Twitter early Thursday morning he was on a flight to San Francisco.
Skuta is envisioned as a backup to Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman, as well as a core special-teams player. Larry Grant and Tavares Gooden, who filled those roles with the 49ers the past two seasons, are unrestricted free agents. A year ago, the 49ers did not re-sign Blake Costanzo, who was one of the team's top special-teams players in 2011.
Skuta had 15 tackles on special teams last season, according to Pro Football Focus, which ranked tied for third in the league.
