Former New York Jets and Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini will be hired as 49ers senior offensive consultant, a source said Saturday morning.
He plans to officially sign next week. Mangini has a defensive background. His job with the 49ers will involving helping offensive coordinator Greg Roman and the entire offensive staff by analyzing their game plans from a defensive perspective.
Mangini was a defensive coordinator under Bill Belichick with the New England Patriots. As head coach of the Jets from 2006-'08, Mangini's teams went 23-25 with one playoff appearance. He lasted just two seasons with the Browns with a 10-22 record. He has worked the past two seasons as an analyst for ESPN.
Mangini was a guest of the 49ers during an in-season practice in September 2011 at Youngstown State.
Assistant head coach/special teams coordinator Brad Seely worked in New England and Cleveland with Mangini. After serving on Belichick's staff together for five seasons, Mangini hired Seely to run his special teams with the Browns.
Also, 49ers general manager Trent Baalke overlapped two seasons as a New York Jets personnel scout (1998 and '99) while Mangini was a defensive assistant.
