SANTA CLARA -- Wide receiver Tavon Austin is coming to the NFC West, but he will not be a member of the 49ers.
Austin, the explosive slot receiver and return man, is now a member of the St. Louis Rams, who traded up to the No. 8 spot in the draft to select him.
The Rams traded with the Buffalo Bills to move ahead of the New York Jets. The 49ers were also believed to be in play for Austin, who caught 215 passes for nearly 2,500 yards and 20 touchdowns the past two seasons at West Virginia. Austin is the only known wide receiver who visited with the 49ers prior to the draft.
[REWIND: Why bold trade for Austin makes sense]
The 49ers last season struggled against quick slot receivers, such as Randall Cobb, Percy Harvin and Danny Amendola, formerly of the Rams. Austin will replace Amendola, who signed with the New England Patriots. Harvin is now a member of the Seattle Seahawks.
