SANTA CLARA -- General manager Trent Baalke said the 49ers still consider free agent safety Charles Woodson as a possibility to add to the team's 90-man offseason roster.

"We had a great visit with Charles when he was in here," Baalke said Wednesday during a session with reporters. "Certainly, you look at what Charles has done in his career. He's had a tremendous career and we feel he still can play the game.

"That's something we're going to continue to look at, and we'll see how the draft goes and everything else, but Charles is someone we're certainly still interested in."

The Green Bay Packers released Woodson in mid-February. Woodson visited the 49ers on March 13, but remains unsigned. The 49ers' next move will take place next week during the draft.

The 49ers are expected to draft a safety to compete for a starting job. Two-time Pro Bowl safety Dashon Goldson signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the offseason. The 49ers signed Craig Dahl, who started all 16 games last season for the St. Louis Rams.

"There are players who are capable of stepping in and starting in this year's draft," Baalke said. "Do we feel a necessity to do that? I would say no. We feel very comfortable with the players that we have. Is it an area that we would like to add depth to and potentially add some more competition to? It certainly is."
