Pending free-agent safety Ed Reed, an 11-year veteran of the Baltimore Ravens, recently hired agent David Dunn.

The significance of the move for the 49ers is that Dunn has represented 49ers general manager Trent Baalke and coach Jim Harbaugh. So with the 49ers in the market for a free safety, it's easy to connect the dots.

The 49ers' All-Pro safety Dashon Goldson is expected to be a hot commodity when the free-agent market opens for business Tuesday at 1 p.m. (PT). The 49ers and Goldson have not been able to come to terms on long-term contract for several seasons.

He signed a one-year deal in 2011 after he attracted little attention as a free agent after the lockout. Last year, the 49ers tagged him as their franchise player.

The 49ers declined to make him their franchise player this year at a one-year price of $7.45 million. If Goldson finds a team willing to offer him a lucrative long-term contract, he likely will sign elsewhere. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the 49ers, Philadelphia, Detroit and Tampa Bay are in play for Goldson with Detroit and Tampa Bay considered the favorites.

Meanwhile, Pro Football Talk reports there is growing speculation around the NFL that Reed could sign with the 49ers. Reed would team with veteran strong safety Donte Whitner. Reed broke up 15 passes and recorded four interceptions for Baltimore last season. He intercepted Colin Kaepernick in the Baltimore's 34-31 victory over the 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII.

But at what price can the 49ers acquire Reed? His last deal with the Ravens was signed in 2006, and it paid him an average of $6.35 milion. Last year, he made $7.2 million in base salary.
