SANTA CLARA -- Cornerback Chris Culliver was carted into the 49ers' locker room early in practice Thursday with a left knee injury.

Cullver went down with the injury while working as a gunner against rookie Marcus Cooper in a punt coverage drill. Culliver remained on the ground for several minutes, as a 49ers assistant athletic trainer Manny Rivera examined him. Coach Jim Harbaugh and defensive backs coach Ed Donatell stood over Culliver, who was in obvious pain as he was helped to a cart on the side of the practice field.

Culliver, 24, is a major part of the 49ers' defense and had a very strong season in 2012 as the 49ers' third cornerback behind starters Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown. He played 63.2 percent of the 49ers' defensive snaps last year.

The 49ers' practice is scheduled to conclude around 2:30 p.m., when head coach Jim Harbaugh will address the media.
