Davis predicts Super Bowl, or does he?

SANTA CLARA -- Tight end Vernon Davis, who played his best football of the season in the 49ers' two playoff games, believes he can keep the momentum going for the full 2012 season."We can pick up where we left off," Davis said Wednesday on the second day of the 49ers' three-day mandatory minicamp. "Each year is different. You never know what's going to happen. But you have to approach this thing with a winning attitude. You can't really predict anything. I can't say we're going to win the Super Bowl. But all I can say is I strongly believe we have the team to get to that point."Davis nearly echoed comments he made a week ago to Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News when he said, "I strongly believe we should be the Super Bowl favorites." But Davis tried to clarify: "I didn't say it like that," he said.
Davis did not predict a Super Bowl title for the 49ers, but he reiterated that the 49ers have the pieces in place to go all the way."I didn't want to sound too cocky," Davis said. "I think we have the potential. I think we have a lot of potential, and I'm not wrong for saying that, because of the talent we have. We have a lot of talent around here, and I respect every man on my team. I respect them because I know they are hard workers."I'm excited. It makes me excited because I know what we have going forward. If we continue stay out here and put everything together, the potential will all start to show."Davis said the 49ers' passing game should be further along in the second year of the team's system after they were prevented from extensive offseason work last summer due to the NFL's work stoppage."With the lockout, we had to hit the ground running," Davis said. "We didn't have much time to come out here and build chemistry with Alex Smith. And that was unfortunate, but that's the way things were last year. But this year is different. We have a chance to come out here and get better. We have a chance to communicate with Alex, get on the same page with him and learn. We're out here and we're going through tons of plays. So we get an opportunity right there to get everything done that we need to get done."Davis averaged 3.7 catches for 42.2 yards through the first 13 games of the season. In the 49ers' final five games, including the playoffs, Davis averaged 5.6 receptions for 107.2 yards."I always tell myself, 'Big-time players make big-time plays all the time, no matter what the condition is.' So I knew I had to help my team and be there for them, and that's what I did," Davis said. "I made sure I took advantage of every opportunity. I seized the moment. From that point, I said we got to get here again. We got to get here again, and I know we can do it because of what we have here."
