SANTA CLARA -- Tight end Vernon Davis has gained clearance from an independent neurologist and the 49ers' team physician and resumed non-contact football activity Thursday after sustaining a concussion.

The next step for Davis to receive clearance to play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals is to remain symptom-free after non-contact football work. Davis took part in limited practice Thursday afternoon, according to the 49ers' official practice participation report.

Team physician Dr. Dan Garza, a leading researcher on concussions at Stanford, and an independent neurologist earlier this week cleared Davis resume physical activity, as part of the NFL's protocol on concussions, the team said. Davis did not practice Wednesday, but returned to on-field work Thursday.

The final step -- contact simulation -- can occur at any point before Sunday's game. The 49ers typically perform the contact simulation test a day or two before the game.

Davis sustained a concussion in the first quarter Sunday night of the 49ers' 42-13 loss on Seattle Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor big hit at the sideline while breaking up a pass. Chancellor was penalized for unnecessary roughness.
