SANTA CLARA -- Receiver Joshua Morgan is scheduled to undergo surgery Monday on a broken right lower leg just above the ankle, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed. The 49ers will add a wide receiver to their 53-man roster, Harbaugh said."Looking at it right now, somebody's got to come up to the 46, which means somebody's got to come up to the 53," Harbaugh said. "Best case is that we add somebody (from outside the organization) or bring somebody up from the practice squad. That's a job for us in the next 24, 48 hours."Of the 53 players on a team's roster, only 46 are allowed to suit up for games. The 49ers have suited up four wide receivers for each of their first five games.
The 49ers have three healthy receivers: Michael Crabtree, Ted Ginn and Kyle Williams. Braylon Edwards underwent surgery to repair torn knee cartilage three weeks ago. He is expected back Oct. 30 against the Cleveland Browns."I think that's a good possibility," Harbaugh said.Morgan might be lost for the season, though the 49ers will wait to see how surgery goes to get an updated reported on his prognosis before making any decision."Josh is going to be out for an extended time -- longer than we anticipate and longer than we hoped, longer than we can afford to have him out," Harbaugh said."I feel sick for him and for our team."Morgan, a fourth-year pro, is in his contract year. He is scheduled to be a free agent after the season. He leads 49ers wide receivers with 15 catches for 220 yards.
