SEATTLE -- Defensive tackle Justin Smith's ironman streak came to an end Sunday night.
Smith, who started 185 consecutive games since his rookie season of 2001, was declared inactive for the 49ers' game against the Seattle Seahawks due to a left elbow injury.
Smith sustained the undisclosed injury early in the second half of the 49ers' 41-34 victory over the New England Patriots. He was unable to return to action. Smith did not practice last week. The 49ers listed Smith as questionable on their official injury report.
Smith's availability for the final regular-season game next week against the Arizona Cardinals and for the playoffs is not known.
Defensive lineman Ricky Jean Francois will start in place of Smith on Sunday. It'll be the fourth start of Jean Francois' career.
Receiver Mario Manningham returns to the lineup after missing two games with a shoulder injury. Rookie A.J. Jenkins returns to the inactive list with Manningham returning to action. Rookie outside linebacker Cam Johnson will make his NFL debut with veteran Clark Haggans out with a shoulder injury. Johnson will wear No. 50.
For the Seahawks, rookie Jeremy Lane will start at right cornerback for Walter Thurmond, and J.R. Sweezy gets the start at right guard for John Moffitt.
