But certainly was not the solution, either. So 49ers coach Mike Singletary is back in the familiar position of contemplating his options for a game that's nine days away at the St. Louis Rams.

Troy Smith was the quarterback when the 49ers played the Rams on Nov. 14 at Candlestick Park. He completed 17 of 28 passes for 356 yards and a touchdown. The 49ers stretched the field, as five different targets had at least 60 yards receiving -- the first time that's happened in franchise history.Singletary said last night he considered putting Troy Smith into the game during the blowout loss to the Chargers, but did not think it would be "fair" because the lack of practice time the backup has received."It is a different thing going from Troy to Alex," Singletary said. "I think it is a horrific thing to go from Alex to Troy."Singletary is scheduled to hold his day-after-game press conference at 2 p.m., but I doubt he'll have a firm decision until the team returns to practice next week.
