Rookie backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick got more practice time this week, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh revealed Friday, as the club reacted to Alex Smith's return from a concussion Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.Smith received full medical clearance to practice this week and play in Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals after sustaining a concussion on the first play of the second quarter against the Cowboys.Smith did not tell the 49ers' medical staff of the head injury at the time and he played the entire game.

"Colin did get more reps this week than last," Harbaugh said, confirming Kaepernick saw the increase in practice time in response to Smith's injury."He (Kaepernick) is doing a good job. I've said it many times. Like a lot of our guys, not where we want to be, yet. But we're working to get there. He's working on a lot of the finer points of the game, and he's doing a very good job of it.Harbaugh also confirmed that Smith was injured when he fell hard on his shoulder and head while being sacked by Cowboys outside linebacker Anthony Spencer on the first play of the second quarter. On Wednesday, before the 49ers reported Smith's concussion, Harbaugh spoke about Smith's toughness.
