Editor's Note: The 49ers announced at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday that Morgan was placed on Injured Reserve.

SANTA CLARA -- Not sure if you heard the news, but the 49ers signed free-agent wide receiver Brett Swain to a one-year contract on Tuesday. The deal will be announced Wednesday, which means the 49ers must clear a roster spot. The most likely scenario is that the 49ers will place receiver Joshua Morgan on injured reserve, thus officially ending his season.Morgan sustained a fractured right lower leg, just above the ankle, late in the 49ers' 48-3 victory Sunday over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Morgan's injury is similar to those sustained by then-49ers cornerback Phillip Adams at the end of last season and Giants catcher Buster Posey. If things go according to plan, Morgan should be ready for a good portion of the 2012 offseason program. However, Morgan's contract expires at the end of this season. The 49ers might wait to see how he bounces back from this injury before deciding his future with the club.Morgan was the 49ers' leading wide receiver at the time of his injury. He had 15 receptions for 220 yards (14.7 average) and one touchdown in the first five games.
