SANTA CLARA -- Four hours before he was scheduled to hit the practice field on Wednesday, 49ers safety Cory Nelms ran the 400-meter hurdles.Or at least that's the way it appeared, as Nelms followed a live stream of the final of the London Olympics. Nelms' girlfriend of six years, first-time Olympian T'erea Brown, finished in sixth place.REWIND: 49ers DB excused to watch girlfriend qualify for Olympic final
"I'm definitely proud of her," said Nelms, who met Brown as members of the Miami (Fla.) track team. "I know she did her best."Nelms received permission on Monday to exit practice for a brief time to watch Brown run in the semifinals. Brown ran personal-best times in two qualifying rounds leading up to Wednesday's final. Her time dropped a little, as she placed sixth with a time of 55.07 seconds. As for Nelms, he is fighting for a roster spot. After spending last year on the practice squad as a cornerback, Nelms switched to safety this season."We've kind of focused him at safety here primarily lately," 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said. "But he's played both corner, and you guys also know that he's played some wide receiver in the past. So, he's trying to make this team primarily as a safety, but also as a jack of all trades."
