Free-agent quarterback Matt Flynn had the first move.
He chose the Seattle Seahawks -- and a contract similar to the deal the 49ers had on the table for Alex Smith.
Failing to get "Kevin Kolb money," Flynn signed a three-year deal worth "up to" 26 million with 10 million guaranteed.
Is the ball back in Alex Smith's court?
It is unknown whether the 49ers' offer to Smith is still available for him to sign. The Miami Dolphins hosted him on a free-agent visit on Sunday.
The 49ers are one of three hopefuls awaiting word from Peyton Manning, along with Denver and Tennessee.
Miami, long out of the Manning picture, now must seriously consider trying to wrap up a deal for Smith to compete with Matt Moore before Manning makes his decision.
