Report: Simpson will play vs. 49ers

CINCINNATI -- The 49ers prepared last week for a Cincinnati Bengals offense that would feature receiver Jerome Simpson. And the Bengals reportedly plan for Simpson to be on the field today.

On Tuesday, a package containing 2 12 pounds of marijuana -- shipped from Eureka, Humboldt County -- was tracked to Simpson's home in northern Kentucky, where police say they found 6 more pounds of marijuana, smoking pipes and scales, authorities said. There has been no arrest or charges in the case.

Simpson did not practice on Friday and the Bengals listed him as questionable ("not injury related") on the injury report. But ESPN reports Simpson will play on Sunday against the 49ers at Paul Brown Stadium.

Dashon Goldson, who will likely return to the 49ers' starting lineup at free safety, said the 49ers prepared this week for facing Simpson, who had eight catches for 180 yards in the first two games. He said the team would merely adjust if Simpson was not active.

The Bengals placed slot receiver Jordan Shipley on injured reserve last week with a knee injury. Simpson is the Bengals' No. 2 receiver behind rookie A.J. Green. Andre Caldwell and rookie Ryan Whalen of Stanford could see more play time Sunday against the 49ers.
