The 49ers have scheduled a visit Wednesday with free-agent safety Charles Woodson, his agent told ESPN on Tuesday.
The Green Bay Packers released Woodson, the 2009 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, on Feb. 15 to avoid paying him a $9 million salary.
Woodson, a 15-year veteran, potentially could replace starting free safety Dashon Goldson, who was visiting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the first day of free agency. The Buccaneers are expected to make a big push to sign Goldson on Wednesday.
Woodson and 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, both Michigan alums, have co-hosted a celebrity golf tournament in Ann Arbor to support local charities.
Woodson played his first eight seasons with the Oakland Raiders and the past seven years with the Packers. He ranks tied for 19th in NFL history with 55 career interceptions.
