Warriors draft look ahead: Point guards

Share

The Warriors head into Thursdays NBA draft with four selections: The No. 7 pick, the No. 30 pick, the No. 35 pick and the No. 52 pick. While the Warriors would seem to have four positions pretty much setpoint guard, shooting guard, power forward and centerthe reality is that they could go in any direction come draft day.

STEINMETZ: NBA mock draft 3.0
Leading up to Thursday, well rank the top players at each position, and see whether or not they could fit into the Warriors draft plans.POINT GUARDSDamian Lillard, Weber State, 6-3, 195: This draft isnt a great one for point guards, but Lillard is certainly the best of the bunch. He scored a lot of points at Weber Stateaveraging 24.5 points per game his junior seasonbut there is little doubt he knows how to run a team and make solid basketball decisions.Warriors angle: In some ways, Lillard may hold the key to draft day for the Golden State. There is talk that Lillard could go to Portland, at No. 6, and if thats the case it would mean the Warriors would likely have an opportunity to select center Andre Drummond. You could also make a case that Lillard, an Oakland native, makes a lot of sense for the Warriors because their starting point guard, Stephen Curry, was hurt most of last year.Kendall Marshall, North Carolina, 6-4, 195: When it comes to the concept of a true point guard, nobody in this class has anything on Marshall. It was Marshall, after all, who won the Bob Cousy award, given to the nations top point guard.Marshall isnt as explosive or gifted offensively as Lillard, but hes going to make a team a nice little point guard.Warriors angle: Unless the Warriors move back, Marshall is unlikely to come into play. Hes slated to go in most mock drafts between Nos. 10 and 18, and thats not where the Warriors are.Marquis Teague, Kentucky, 6-2, 189: Whats most impressive about Teague is his poise and basketball pedigree. Hes not the sexiest point guard in the draft, but theres a lot to be said of Teague. He played just one season at Kentucky, but led the team in assists and minutes.Warriors angle: Assuming the Warriors do not select Lillard with the No. 7 pick, it certainly stands to reason they could address that position with their second pick in the first round (No. 30).If the Warriors target a point guard with that pick, Teague could be there.Tomas Satoransky, Czech Republic, 6-7, 198 pounds: What makes Satoransky so interesting is his size (6-foot-7) paired with his ability to play point guard.Satoransky raised eyebrows at the adidas Eurocamp earlier this month, but there is certainly a chance hell be available at No. 30. If hes there, he would make a lot of sense for Golden State, if for no other reason than he could remain in Europe for a season without taking up a roster spot.Warriors general manager Bob Myers is on record saying hed rather not draft four rookies, and bring each of them into camp.Tony Wroten, Washington, 6-5, 205 pounds: Opinions differ widely on Wroten, who is raw and not a true point guard. But hes athletic and has very good size for the position. No doubt, however, Wroten will need to develop before he becomes a consistent contributor.Warriors angle: If most or all of the aforementioned point guards are off the board, Wroten could get a sniff at No. 35.
