49ers sign LB Brooks to six-year extension

The 49ers announced a six-year extension for linebacker Ahmad Brooks on Tuesday.
Brooks started all 16 games for the 49ers last season and finished third on the team with seven sacks and 59 tackles.Brooks earned 1.5 million in pay last season on the final year of a two-year, 4.25 million contract he signed in April of 2010. Brooks, who turns 28 next month, has played six NFL seasons. At the reported salary of 7 million a year, Brooks would clearly be slated to return as an every down player at outside linebacker (and defensive end in passing situations), along with Aldon Smith. General manager Trent Baalke said last week that it's safe to say that the 49ers envision Aldon Smith as an every-down player in 2012.

Parys Haralson started at right outside linebacker and played base downs while Aldon Smith entered games in pass-rush situations. Haralson is scheduled to earn 2.45 million in 2012, which the 49ers might consider too high for a backup.
