Pro Bowl safety Dashon Goldson is in no hurry to sign his one-year tender as the 49ers' franchise player, his agent said Friday."There are no plans to sign the franchise tag at this time," agent Ben Dogra of CAA Football told CSNBayArea.com via text message. "We will continue to speak with the 49ers in the upcoming weeks."Goldson this week hired CAA Football as his representation after firing agent Drew Rosenhaus.
The 49ers on Friday tendered Goldson with the non-exclusive franchise tag, allowing him to negotiate with other teams. If Goldson were to sign a contract offer sheet from another club, the 49ers would have the right to match the offer. If they 49ers chose not to match the offer, the team would receive two first-round draft choices as compensation.NEWS: 49ers use franchise tag on Goldson
As soon as Goldson signs the 49ers' franchise tag, the approximate 6.2 million salary becomes guaranteed. The franchise tender provides Goldson with a one-year deal equivalent to the average of the top five highest paid players at his position each year, over the last five seasons.Goldson, 27, recorded a career-high six interceptions last season as part of a 49ers defense that held opposing quarterbacks to a 73.6 passer rating."Dashon has been a 49er since we selected him in the fourth round of the 2007 draft," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. "By using the franchise tag on Dashon, it affords us the opportunity to continue to work on a long-term contract with him, while also ensuring he will be a 49er for a sixth season, in 2012."The last time the 49ers used the franchise tag was on nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin in 2010. Franklin declined to sign the contract until there were two weeks remaining before the start of the regular season.Franklin did not play well in 2010, and he did not receive much attention on the free-agent market before the start of the 2011 regular season. He eventually signed a one-year contract with the New Orleans Saints.
