Akers vital with four FGs and onside kick

SAN FRANCISCO -- The last time David Akers attempted an onside kick was in December against the New York Giants.Akers, then with Philadelphia Eagles, had a successful onside kick in the midst of the Eagles' rally from a 21-point fourth-quarter deficit that ended with DeSean Jackson's punt return on the final play of the game.On Sunday, Akers had the element of surprise working for him. Delanie Walker made a leaping catch of Akers' onside kick in the second quarter of a 6-6 game.

"It's more of a calculated risk," Akers said. "You don't try it on everybody. You don't try to come back and sting somebody twice with it, either. It's one of those things, if you can get it at a time when you're really not thinking this is going to be an onside kick.The play led to one of Akers' four field goals in the 49ers' 27-20 victory Sunday at Candlestick Park. Akers nailed kicks from 36, 52, 39 and 28 yards. He is now 5-for-5 on field-goal attempts from outside of 50 yards.The 49ers saw that the Eagles were lining up on their kickoff return with a five-man front, instead of six players lining up 10 yards off the ball. Special teams coordinator Brad Seely felt during the week that there would be an opportunity to regain possession if the opportunity arose."Almost called it one kickoff earlier, but the second kickoff just re-confirmed it in our mind that it was there," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. "Great job by Brad Seely. Great job by our players executing it, and we've got a kicker that can execute that as well as anybody in football."
