SANTA CLARA -- Coach Jim Harbaugh had an unscheduled visit with the media on Friday to talk about the 49ers' All-Pro selections and some other topics.Inside linebackers NaVorro Bowman and Patrick Willis, defensive tackle Justin Smith, kicker David Akers and punter Andy Lee were chosen first-team Associated Press All-Pro. In addition, Justin Smith was voted second-team defensive end.The 49ers have a bye during the first weekend of the playoffs, and will play in the divisional round Saturday, Jan. 14, at 1:30 p.m. at Candlestick Park against either New Orleans, Atlanta or the New York Giants. Here's what Harbaugh had to say. . .
What does it say about the team that five players were named first-team All-Pro?
Harbaugh: "We're always happy for the other guy's success, and I think what it says is a rising tide lifts all ships. And so we're happy for them."Bowman was first team and did not make Pro Bowl what does it say for him to get recognized?
Harbaugh: "He was a second-team (Pro Bowl) alternate. I think it's great recognition. He is our leading tackler, I believe. To do that alongside Patrick Willis, they've done a phenomenal job of playing great football and playing together well, and playing within the framework of our defense. He's already in his second year, and doing a tremendous job."Justin Smith was first-team defensive tackle and second-team defensive end. That's unique, isn't it?
Harbaugh: "That's unique. The fellas got a chuckle out of that when I announced it to them. 'First-team defensive tackle Justin Smith.' 'Second-team defensive end Justin Smith.' They got a laugh out of it."What is he: a defensive end or a defensive tackle?
Harbaugh: "He's both in our system. He plays tackle when we're in the four-down schemes, and he plays end when we're in the three-down schemes."Were there any who didn't make it that you thought should've been on?
Harbaugh: "Oh, sure. But based on what? There are a lot of good players in the league and I don't want to make any comparisons to those who made it or those who didn't. It's nice recognition. We're happy for those guys, and they're very well-deserving."Where will you watch the games this weekend?
Harbaugh: "Forty-nine, forty-nine Centennial Boulevard (the 49ers practice facility). We'll watch it here as a group, until we know who we're playing and then as soon as we know, we'll be able to get right on to the game-planning for that opponent. Literally, as soon as we know, we'll start doing that."What do you do when you're gearing up for a long night?
Harbaugh: "If it's just the coaches, we'll bring in pizzas or something like that."Do you feel like you guys are healing up out here the way you'd like on your bye week?
Harbaugh: "Yes. Our guys are in high spirits, great morale and really moving quick and fast. We got two really good days of practice and a third day was a recovery day, a workout day. And I think that helped, as well. Coming off our three days together, we're feeling good about the week."
