SAN FRANCISCO -- Rookie pass-rusher Aldon Smith recorded two sacks on Sunday in the 49ers' 26-0 victory over the St. Louis Rams to extend his team-lead to 9.5 for the season. He showed his power and his speed while coming within a half-sack of becoming the first 49ers player since Andre Carter in 2002 to reach double digits in that category. The power was demonstrated when he toppled St. Louis Rams left tackle Adam Goldberg like a bowling pin and proceeded to drop quarterback A.J. Feeley for a 7-yard sack in the third quarter. The speed was demonstrated when he took down Feeley for another 7-yard sack on a fourth-and-12 play in the fourth quarter. Smith got to his feet and made a mad sprint to the 49ers sideline, where he promptly took off his helmet, placed it aside, and took a seat on the bench."I was just running home and sitting down," explained Smith, who also recovered a fumble in the game. "Just like running home from school. That was a hard sprint."Smith, the No. 7 overall pick, is closing in on the 49ers rookie sack record. Charles Haley, a fourth-round pick in 1986, recorded 12 sacks as a rookie.
