SANTA CLARA -- Alex Smith, just like each NFL starting quarterback, was required to be outfitted with a microphone for one game this season. It's a bulky unit that is affixed to the back of his shoulder pads. Smith said he is glad that he will not be required to wear it again this season. After all, he fulfilled his requirement Thursday night when the 49ers faced the Baltimore Ravens.
Some of Smith's audio was used on the NFL Network's "Sound FX." On that show, which aired Saturday night, it was revealed that 49ers tight end Delanie Walker was all alone behind the Ravens secondary on the first play of the game.In the coaches booth, 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman said, "We had a touchdown deep." And Smith was shown on the sideline telling 49ers quarterbacks coach Geep Chryst, "Hey, I had Delanie big on the first play."On Monday, Smith said he noticed Walker was all alone shortly after he threw a 2-yard completion to Vernon Davis along the right sideline on the first play."First play of the game, I'm really thinking, the way the play was designed, getting a completion, get the ball rolling," Smith said. "A little misdirection, get out of the pocket, and as soon as I threw the ball late to Vernon, I looked up and saw Delanie by himself, and I knew there was potentially a chance there."Now, it was the first play of the game. And you're thinking, 'Ah, I'm going to get a lot of opportunities, and I'll have several more.' But in a game like that, it turns out, looking back, that was a big missed opportunity."
