Smith says new contract can wait

SANTA CLARA -- Quarterback Alex Smith, who is playing under a one-year contract with the 49ers, said Wednesday that any talk about a contract extension can wait until after the season."It's nothing I've talked about or even really thought about," Smith said. "It's so early. I'm focused on playing football. It's not something I want to think about in the middle of the season, to be honest with you."It's so fun to come to work every day with the group of guys we have and do what we're doing. . . . Not thinking about."I asked if the level of trust now with Smith and the organization means that this kind of talk can wait until after the season.Smith answered, "I think so. I do. It's something the guys upstairs -- Trent (Baalke) and coach Harbaugh -- it's something we can deal with later."Smith made 31.9 million over his first six seasons with the 49ers after accepting a pay cut following his fourth season. After the lockout ended before the 2011 season, Smith signed a one-year 4.9 million contract with San Francisco.
