SANTA CLARA -- Neither 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis nor left tackle Joe Staley participated in individual drills at the beginning of practice Friday.Willis went through stretching and light rehab work on his strained right hamstring while his 49ers teammates broke off into individual drills. It is looking less likely Willis will be able to play Monday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers.Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said Willis would probably have to get some practice time before he could return to action. Willis sustained the hamstring strain Dec. 4 against the St. Louis Rams. The 49ers will also hold a full practice on Saturday.
"When you're dealing with a hamstring injury, the guy's got to show that he can run," Fangio said.Larry Grant is likely to make his second start of the season on Monday in place of Willis at the "jack" linebacker position.
"Whenever Patrick is ready to play, whether it's this week or next week, he'll be ready to play and he'll go right back in there," Fangio said. "I don't look at it as resting him. He's rehabbing. So when he's healthy, he'll be playing."Staley sustained a concussion Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. He did not practice Thursday, either, when coach Jim Harbaugh said he had been cleared for walk-through work but not for practice.NOTE: Grant was fined 15,000 for roughing the passer, as he struck Cardinals quarterback John Skelton below the knee area, the league said. . . . Cardinals safety Adrian Wilson was fined 7,500 for roughing the passer, grabbing Alex Smith's facemask.
