ALAMEDA -- He was the workout warrior of the NFL Scouting Combine and many draftniks had Bruce Campbell foolishly going to the Raiders with the No. 8 overall pick.Indeed, the Raiders snagged him, but in the more sensible fourth round.I asked Campbell this morning about his development and comfort level.Im pretty comfortable with it, he said. Im getting to the point where Im starting to relax, not nervous. Not as nervous as I was during the preseason before games.A left tackle by trade, the 6-feet-6, 315-pound Campbell is working exclusively at right guard these days. The only time hes seen on the field has come on special teams thus far on kickoff return and field goal.
Does he see himself spelling Cooper Carlisle at right guard anytime soon?Still just waiting, really, he said. Just waiting for my opportunity, waiting for my chance.Coach Tom Cable said Campbell is progressing.Actually, I like what's going on with Bruce, Cable said. I felt like the last two to three weeks he's starting to get it, he's starting to figure it out and he's starting to understand the tempo and violence it takes to play with. He's getting a better understanding of what he's doing. I like where he's headed.Meaning, solely at right guard? For right now it's just important to get him in the system and get him to a level where he can play, Cable said. To put him somewhere, that's just simply a decision you make. But you have to get a guy up to the pro level, get him ready to go into a game where he can succeed. What'syour take? Email Pauland let him know. He may use it in his Mailbag.
