What has been expected for weeks is expected to become official today as the NFL Network is reporting the Raiders will release linebacker Kamerion Wimbley today.Wimbley, who is due to be guaranteed 24 million by Oakland if he is on the Raiders roster on Saturday, should become a hot pass-rushing commodity the minute he becomes a free agent.
Consider: Wimbley had seven sacks last season and, according to Per Pro Football Focus, he also had 16 quarterback hits and 40 pressures in 1,075 snaps. His sack total ranked second on the Raiders to defensive tackle Tommy Kelly's 7.5 sacks and Wimbley had more pressures than any other NFL linebacker in a 4-3 scheme last season and graded out as the Raiders' top defensive player. He has 42.5 career sacks and eight forced fumbles.

Financially, Wimbley, who already has 6.5 million guaranteed for this coming year, has a salary cap number of 11.85 million for 2012 for Oakland. Cutting him before tomorrow would save the Raiders 17.5 million going forward as 4.5 million of his 11 million salary for 2012 becomes guaranteed if he is still on the roster March 17, as well as his entire 11 million base salary for 2013 and 2 million of his 10 million salary for 2014.Ifwhen he is cut, Wimbley becomes the seventh Raiders player released this offseason, along with cornerbacks Stanford Routt and Chris Johnson, safety Hiram Eugene, defensive tackle John Henderson, right guard Cooper Carlisle and tight end Kevin Boss. Routt and Boss have both signed with Kansas City.
