Flying flags keep Raiders on pace for penalty records

ALAMEDA -- And now, for our weekly check-in with the Raiders' penalty problems.Yes, the Silver and Black still have issues with yellow flags. And after picking up 10 more penalties for 86 yards against Detroit on Sunday, the Raiders maintained their comfortable lead in both categories this season and remained on pace to set single-season records in both dubious categories.
With 140 penalties for 1,202 yards, the Raiders have comfortable leads over Seattle (125 penalties) and the Lions (966 yards). And being on pace for 160 penalties for 1,374 yards would eclipse the 158 penalties for 1,304 yards set by the 1998 Kansas City Chiefs.Of course, the Raiders' single-season franchise marks are about to go down as well under first-year coach Hue Jackson, who has made it a point of emphasis to reduce penalties...to no avail. The 1994 and 1996 Raiders teams were each penalized 156 times and last year's team picked up 1,276 penalty yards.Should Oakland maintain its healthy lead in penalties, the Raiders will also set a new standard in most seasons leading the league in penalties with their 17th such season, breaking a tie with the Chicago Bears. The Raiders have already led the league in penalties in 1963, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1975, 1982, 1984, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2010.
