Sharks' Havlat out for ‘extended period' after surgery

SAN JOSESharks general manager Doug Wilson called it a good news, bad news situation for Marty Havlat.Bad, because the injured winger suffered a partial tear of his left hamstring that will keep him out a ballpark of six-to-eight weeks. Good, though, in that Havlat and the Sharks thought they might be dealing with a complete tear that would have likely sidelined the 30-year-old for the rest of the season.Havlat had the hamstring repaired by Dr. Mark Safran at Stanford University on Wednesday.

The news going in to surgery was we thought it could have been a complete tear. It was not, said Wilson before the Sharks-Lightning game at HP Pavilion. The procedure was done, there was one tendon that was torn. Its been repaired surgically, and hes going to be out an extended period of time, but he will be back way in advance, prior to the end of the year. Thats the best case scenario for us.

A reliable medical source later confirmed that six-to-eight weeks is an accurate time frame for recovery from a partially torn hamstring.
Havlat suffered the injury hopping over the boards midway through the third period of Saturdays 3-2 win over Edmonton. He scored earlier in the game, just his second goal of the season, after a two assist effort the prior game against Colorado. Its frustrating because he was playing very well and was right on track with how we want him to play, but well deal with it as every other team has had to, said Wilson.Havlat missed all of training camp and the first three games of the regular season with a shoulder injury he suffered in May, while playing for the Czech Republic in the World Championships.Having a significant mid-season injury is nothing new to Havlat, either. He missed the majority of the 2005-06 season with a shoulder injury while in Ottawa, playing in just 18 games. After a trade to Chicago that offseason, Havlat played in 56 games with the Blackhawks in 2006-07 but just 35 games in 2007-08 with shoulder and groin injuries. In 26 games this season, Havlat has two goals and 13 assists for 15 points and 16 penalty minutes.
