ALAMEDA -- A day earlier, freshly-signed pass-rushing specialist Andre Carter said he expected to play on Sunday in Denver."If I wasn't ready, then I wouldn't be here," he said.So after his first practice, wearing No. 97, how did he look?"Andre's out here working," said Raiders defensive coordinator Jason Tarver. "I have some history with Andre. He's very excited, he's working. He's out here, moving around well today. We'll see how he progresses."He's a smart guy. He knows a lot of defense."Carter, who had 10 sacks in 14 games for New England last year before a quadriceps injury ended his season, is expected to help a sack-deficient Oakland pass rush that has just three sacks thus far.Asked if the 33-year-old Carter could play this weekend, coach Dennis Allen said, "We'll see."If he did play, Carter could play defensive end on either side, and rushing the quarterback is a little more one-dimensional than learning an offensive playbook."Obviously, there's not as much mentally that goes into that particular position," Allen said. "But there's a whole lot that goes into (it) physically and understanding how to play the game from a physical standpoint."But he's a veteran player, so he understands how to play the game. So the learning curve for him is not quite as steep as it would be for some others."Carter, who spoke to reporters on Wednesday, was not available during open locker room on Thursday.
