Injured Lechler still at least a week away

NAPA -- He has been conspicuous by his absence, and it appears as though Shane Lechler's nonappearance in Raiders training camp will last at least another week.Lechler, a seven-time Pro Bowler and six-time All-Pro who is widely regarded as the best punter in the NFL today -- if not of all time -- has been on the Raiders' Non-Football Injury list with a left knee ailment since the first week of camp."Hes out here some but hes mostly in the training room getting his rehab," coach Dennis Allen said of Lechler. "Hes probably maybe a week away before we really actually get him out here and start working him. I dont want to necessarily put a timetable on it but I wouldnt expect to see him out here in the next couple of days punting."Lechler enters the 2012 season with the highest career punting average in NFL history at 47.58 yards, ahead of the 49ers' Andy Lee and his 45.74 yards average. And Lechler's average of 51.14 yards in 2009 is the second highest single-season average in league history, behind Sammy Baugh's 51.40 average in 1940.And Lechler is entering a contract year.In his place, undrafted rookie Marquette King has been doing the punting. While King has impressed with booming kicks, getting at least 5.2 seconds of hangtime per this reporter's stopwatch on a few kicks, he has been somewhat inconsistent."Hes doing good," Allen said of King. "Obviously, you guys see him, when he hits it, he hits it as good as anybody. Hes just got to work on staying consistent."Were trying to get him better. Were trying to see where hes at. Like were dealing with a situation with Shane right now, if Shane goes down, you got to have somebody that can fill that role. So, were looking for guys that can help us get better."
