SAN FRANCISCO -- Running back Frank Gore, who went through warmups prior to the 49ers' exhibition opener Thursday against the Denver Broncos, did not play.
Gore is expected to see limited duty in the exhibition season. Gore carried four times for 8 yards in the 2012 preseason.
The eight-year veteran wore his uniform during the game, but was not wearing cleats. LaMichael James got the start and carried five times for 24 yards on the opening drive.
Defensive lineman Justin Smith, who missed two of the 49ers' past three practices with a finger injury, did not suit up. Smith is fully recovered from the triceps injury that sidelined him late last season and impacted his effectiveness in the playoffs. Demarcus Dobbs started at right defensive end for Smith.
Center Jonathan Goodwin also sat out. Third-year player Daniel Kilgore started in his place.

Michael Wilhoite started at inside linebacker in place of All-Pro Patrick Willis, who will likely miss the entire exhibition season but be ready for the Sept. 8 opener against the Green Bay Packers.
Receivers Kyle Williams and Quinton Patton did not suit up. Williams missed five practices in training camp with a hamstring strain. Patton has not been able to catch a pass since the opening of training camp due to an injury to his left index finger.
The newest 49ers player, cornerback Eric Wright, was placed on the non-football injury/illness list upon signing a one-year contract with the 49ers.
