SAN FRANCISCO -- The team gathered around 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick for a pregame talk on the Candlestick Park turf before heading back into the locker room prior to the kickoff of the exhibition season.

Kaepernick took over the inspirational speaking duties from linebacker Patrick Willis, who is likely to sit out the exhibition season with a broken right hand.

Then, Kaepernick made the most of of his one series Thursday night against the Denver Broncos, as he engineered a 13-play, 62-yard drive that culminated with Phil Dawson's 32-yard field goal.

Kaepernick completed 4 of 4 pass attempts for 38 yards during his short stint. He even picked up a first down with a 6-yard scramble on a third-and-2 situation that ended with his wise decision to slide and avoid contact.

Kaepernick completed a 12-yard pass to tight end Vernon Davis, and then hooked up with wide receiver Anquan Boldin on completions of 10 and 4 yards for first downs. Boldin made the 4-yard reception with linebacker Stewart Bradley hanging all over him on a second-and-4 play.

Wide receiver Marlon Moore got the start, and he made a nifty diving catch against the coverage of safety Duke Ihenacho.

Colt McCoy replaced Kaepernick at quarterback for the 49ers' second series.
