Harbaugh angers Schwartz with postgame actions

DETROIT -- Jim Schwartz was a finalist for the 49ers' head-coaching job in 2005. He thought he would get hired, but the 49ers selected Mike Nolan, instead.Schwartz, an already-fiery coach, saw his Detroit Lions fall from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 25-19 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.And 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, who had a notable post-game handshake while at Stanford with then-USC coach Pete Carroll, angered Schwartz with the way he reacted in the seconds after the 49ers clinched the victory.Harbaugh's exuberance showed when he hopped across the field, untucked his black 49ers sweatshirt and engaged in a hard post-game handshakeslap with the losing coach.

After the brief exchange, Schwartz went after Harbaugh as the men were leaving the field. Schwartz said he was shoved and subjected to an obscenity at the middle of the field."(I) went to congratulate coach Harbaugh and got shoved out of the way," Schwartz said. "(I) didn't expect an obscenity at that point, so it was a surprise to me at the end of the game."A skirmish ensued near the tunnel that leads to the locker rooms for both teams under the stands at Ford Field. Players and coaches were involved in the ruckus, as Schwartz left the field.Said Harbaugh, "I was just revved up and it's totally on me. I shook his hand too hard. I mean, I really went in and it was a strong kind of slap, grab handshake -- kind of the same as I've been doing with (Blake) Costanzo and a few of the other guys. So that's on me -- little too hard of a handshake there."When asked if there was anything said between he and Schwartz, Harbaugh answered, "You know, you get bumped, you get bumped ... felt like a chest bump there."I was not agitated, believe me. Not agitated, very happy. Very happy with the win. It's a great thrill of winning, great feeling of victory. I'm really proud of our team."The 49ers pulled out the victory when 49ers tight end Delanie Walker caught a 6-yard touchdown on a fourth-down pass from quarterback Alex Smith with 1:51 remaining for a 22-19 lead. The 49ers and Lions both are 5-1 on the season."It was an emotional game," Walker said. "When you come into somebody's house when they're 5-0 and you take a win away from them in the last minute of the game, it can get real emotional."Said Schwartz, "It was a big win for them, and they were excited about it, and I think I'll just leave it there."
