49ers Mailbag: A look at team's future cap

Q: Was cap space problem for 49ers to give Dashon Goldson long term contract? (@jdub1998)
The 49ers have no cap concerns for this season. The day the 49ers placed the franchise tender of 6.212 million on Goldson, that figure immediately counted toward the 49ers' 2012 cap.At this point in the offseason, only the team's top 51 salaries (and the money devoted to player who are no longer on the roster) count toward the cap. The 49ers are 3.395 million under the cap, and that's plenty of room for this season. But where cap concerns enter into the picture is down the road. The cap is not expected to rise much through the 2015 season. And the cap is likely to go up only about 300,000 next year to approximately 120.9 million, according to an ESPN report in March.Teams will be allowed to carry over unused cap space from this year to next year. Already, the 49ers have 123 million in cap space devoted to 2013 -- a number that could be lowered depending on which players remain after this year's final cuts.Currently, the 49ers have 19 players scheduled to exceed 2 million against the cap in 2013:Alex Smith 9.75 million
Vernon Davis 8.34 million
Justin Smith 8 million
Carlos Rogers 7.1 million
Ahmad Brooks 6.65 million
