49ers camp summary (813): Manningham's best day

Share

Summary: Receiver Mario Manningham had his most active practice of training camp with seven receptions during the various team periods in the 2 12-hour practice.Manningham did not play in the 49ers' exhibition opener Friday night in what coach Jim Harbaugh called a game-time decision to give some of the veterans the night off. Manningham appears to be building a rapport with starting quarterback Alex Smith, from whom he caught five of his passes. The 49ers were shorthanded in their defensive front seven during practice Monday with the absences of three starters: outside linebackers Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks and nose tackle Isaac Sopoaga. And early in the team's first 11-on-11 period, reserve nose tackle Ian Williams went down with an injury that kept him out of practice for the remainder of the day. Williams went to the ground and remained motionless for several seconds. The 49ers did not immediately reveal the nature of Williams' injury. He spent the rest of the practice watching from the sideline.Quarterback Scott Tolzien, who played well in the 49ers' exhibition opener Friday against Minnesota, threw two interceptions on the day.Perrish Cox picked off Tolzien's underthrown pass to rookie receiver A.J. Jenkins on a deep seam route. After the starters were dismissed, safety C.J. Spillman intercepted Tolzien's deep ball intended for wideout Nathan Palmer.Safety Dashon Goldson intercepted a pass from Josh Johnson that slipped through the hands of newly signed tight end Gijon Robinson.Injury report: Outside linebacker Aldon Smith (right hip) missed his second practice. He was seen leaving the 49ers' facility Monday with the assistance of a crutch. He sustained the injury in the first quarter of the 49ers' exhibition opener Friday night against the Minnesota Vikings. . . . Tight end Delanie Walker (right knee) missed his first practice after being injured during the team's practice Sunday at Candlestick Park . . . Brooks, Sopoaga, linebacker Tavares Gooden, tight end Nate Byham, outside linebacker Cam Johnson and receiver Joe Hastings also did not practice. . . Running back Jewel Hampton (foot) is on the non-football injury list, while outside linebacker Darius Fleming (knee) is on the physically-unable-to-perform list.Offensive play of the day: Jenkins ran a stop-and-go, and cornerback Deante' Purvis stopped for a bit too long, allowing Jenkins to get far behind him to haul in Tolzien's pass 40 yards down the field after the starters had already been excused for the day.Defensive play of the day: Cornerback Chris Culliver had a good day with three passes broken up. His best play came when he leaped high to bat down a deep pass from Tolzien that was intended for Palmer along the right sideline.Transaction report: The 49ers signed free-agent tight ends Gijon Robinson (Missouri Western State) and Joe Sawyer (Southwestern Oklahoma State). Robinson played three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, catching 31 passes for 240 yards and a touchdown. He was recently released by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Because Sawyer has not been in an NFL camp this summer, he must undergo an acclimation period before he can put on pads to practice. The 49ers began the day with 89 players on their roster. The 49ers waived guard Garrett Chisolm to make room for both signed players on the 90-man roster.
Notable: During a red-zone drill, backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick's pass was deflected at the line of scrimmage. The ball bounced back and was caught by Kaepernick, who took off running around the right side. The practice play was whistled dead, but Kaepernick continued into the end zone for what would've been an easy Kaepernick-to-Kaepernick touchdown pass.Next practice: The 49ers return to practice Tuesday from 2:30 to 5:10 p.m. The 49ers will break camp after practice on Friday.
