49ers staff nearly intact for Harbaugh's second season

SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers' coaching staff with no allowable offseason contact with its players a year ago produced extraordinary results with 14 victories and a trip to the NFC Championship.Jim Harbaugh was named NFL Coach of the Year in his rookie season. And, amazingly, none of his top assistants was hired away."It's very positive being able to all come back together again," 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman said.Roman's return to the 49ers seemed to be the biggest question mark. He interviewed for the head-coaching job at Penn State. And he was rumored in April to be a serious candidate for the Arkansas job after Bobby Petrino was fired. However, Roman said it was all hogwash."Never heard a thing about it," Roman said. "Never had any interest in it. And that's all news to me. I have one job I want, and it's this one."The only turnover on the coaching staff this offseason occurred when offensive assistant Bobby Engram, a former NFL wide receiver, left his entry-level job with the 49ers to become receivers coach at Pitt under first-year coach Paul Chryst, the brother of 49ers quarterbacks coach Geep Chryst.Former Washington State head coach Paul Wulff has joined the 49ers' staff as "senior offensive assistant," though the organization has yet to announce the hiring.Special-teams coordinator Brad Seely interviewed for the Indianapolis Colts' head-coaching job. (The Colts hired Chuck Pagano.) The 49ers denied defensive backs coach Ed Donatell an opportunity to interview for the Tampa Bay defensive coordinator position.Roman said the continuity on the coaching staff can only be a benefit in Year 2 of Harbaugh's tenure."They're a really good staff, and last year we were piecing it together," Roman said. "Like anything else, the more you do it, the more efficient you can get and understand where everybody's coming from. There wasn't a lot of time last year once the season started to explain why sometimes. . . . This year, we're a lot further ahead. And these guys do a phenomenal job, day-in and day-out."
