49ers zero in on passing game during OTAs

The emphasis continues on the passing game -- offense and defense -- when the 49ers open their second week of organized team activities on Tuesday in Santa Clara.
The 49ers will hold their second week with three days of two-hour, non-padded practices. And that means a lot of valuable work for quarterbacks Alex Smith, Colin Kaepernick, Josh Johnson and Scott Tolzien, along with the group of wide receivers and defensive backs.RELATED: Harbaugh says 49ers 'feature four NFL quarterbacks'
"Balance will always be a focus, but especially out here in just helmets, it's tough to get great run looks," Smith said. "You practice that stuff to keep it. The passing game is much better when it's like this (with) no pads."
Pro Bowl safety Dashon Goldson, the team's unsigned franchise player, continues to be the only member of the team's 90-man roster who has not attended any of the 49ers' offseason program.A league source told CSNBayArea.com that Goldson, set to earn 6.212 million in 2012 as the team's franchise player, is seeking a long-term deal similar to the five-year, 40 million contract safety Eric Weddle signed last year with the San Diego Chargers.Running back LaMichael James (Oregon), receiver Chris Owusu (Stanford) and defensive tackle Matthew Masifilo (Stanford) are the only rookies not eligible to participate in the 49ers' offseason program because their colleges have yet to hold graduation ceremonies. Each was limited to only the three days of practices at rookie minicamp May 11-13.Also, cornerback Carlos Rogers and receiverreturn man Ted Ginn did not practice last week due to undisclosed injuries. Both players attended classwork and watched practices from the sideline.Guard Joe Looney has yet to be cleared to practice after sustaining a fractured foot at the Senior Bowl practices in January. Outside linebacker Darius Fleming is potentially out for the season after sustaining a torn ACL during the rookie minicamp three weeks ago.The 49ers will open Tuesday's practice to the local media. The practice is scheduled from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
