SANTA CLARA -- Eighty-seven players on the 49ers' 90-man roster are currently eligible to practice on the eve of the team's first full-squad workout. All of the 49ers veterans passed their physicals Thursday on the official reporting date for training camp, a club spokesman said. The 49ers' first practice is scheduled for Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 5:10 p.m. on their Santa Clara practice field. The 49ers have two non-padded practices slated. On Sunday, the team is scheduled to be in full pads for the first time.
Three rookies must pass physicals before they will be allowed to practice: guard Joe Looney (foot), outside linebacker Darius Fleming (knee) and running back Jewel Hampton (knee). Those players count against the team's 90-player limit and can be activated at any point before the team's final cuts. Fleming, a fifth-round draft pick, sustained a torn ACL during the 49ers' rookie minicamp and is likely ticketed for injured reserve. The only roster move from Thursday were safety Dashon Goldson's signing of his one-year franchise tender and the signing of veteran guard Leonard Davis to a one-year deal. The 49ers released undrafted offensive lineman David Gonzales (Washington State) to make room for Davis.
