Hampton returns to practice, Fleming remains on PUP

SANTA CLARA -- Rookie running back Jewel Hampton, who underwent offseason foot surgery, will return to 49ers practice on Tuesday, the team said.Meanwhile, rookie outside linebacker Darius Fleming, a fifth-round draft pick, will remain on the physically-unable-to-perform list for the remainder of the season. Fleming sustained a torn ACL in his left knee in one of the opening drills of the 49ers' rookie minicamp in May.Hampton has been on the reservenon-football injury list after undergoing offseason surgery to remove bone spurs in his left foot. If the 49ers do not activate him after a three-week window, beginning Tuesday, he would finish the season on the NFI list.Last season at Southern Illinois, Hampton rushed for 1,121 yards and 17 touchdowns. He transferred from Iowa, where he set the school's freshman record with seven rushing touchdowns.The 49ers signed Hampton to a three-year contract as an undrafted free agent. The deal included a 5,000 signing bonus.Fleming, who works out daily at the 49ers' practice facility, should be healthy for the team's offseason program. Fleming started 36 of the 50 games in which he saw action. He recorded 15 sacks in his college carer. He received a four-year, 2.26 million contract with a 164,800 signing bonus.
