SANTA CLARA -- Colin Kaepernick is still the 49ers' No. 2 quarterback.Nothing has changed. And it's difficult to imagine that much can happen in the final two weeks of the exhibition season for coach Jim Harbaugh to remove him from that position on the depth chart."Yeah, he's the No. 2 quarterback," Harbaugh said Thursday. When asked if that would carry over into the regular season, Harbaugh responded, "Yeah, everything's fluid and ongoing, but as of today, yes, that's the way it stands."Harbaugh declined to reveal the play time for the quarterbacks in the 49ers' exhibition game Sunday at the Denver Broncos. But he said the Alex Smith will start and will be the next quarterback to enter."We'll see. Definitely with Alex and Colin (Kaepernick), and we'll see how it plays out after that," Harbaugh said.In the first two exhibition games, Kaepernick has completed 9 of 17 passes for 59 yards while also gaining a team-leading 104 yards rushing and a touchdown on four attempts.
One player in the 49ers' backfield who will not see action is veteran running back Brandon Jacobs. His exhibition season is over after he sustained a knee injury Saturday night against the Houston Texans. With Jacobs' body of work concluded for the preseason, Harbaugh all but guaranteed Jacobs would make the 49ers' 53-man roster. Jacobs gained 39 yards on five carries in the exhibition season. He sustained a left knee injury expected to keep him out a couple of weeks on his first carry Saturday night against the Houston Texans.
"Yes, he has done enough," Harbaugh said. The 49ers are holding out hope that Jacobs will be available as the short-yardage back in the regular-season opener Sept. 9 at the Green Bay Packers.
