SANTA CLARA -- Typically, the 49ers players get Mondays off after a Sunday game. On Tuesdays, they return to watch the film of the previous game. The weekly routine is altered this week, as the 49ers must get ready to play on Thursday. The 49ers must quickly get over their 26-3 thumping at the hands of the New York Giants. They will not even watch the complete film of Sunday's game because there's another game coming up in a hurry.
"I don't think any of us feel we had our best day," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday. "Certainly, wouldn't be human if you didn't hurt today. But there's no time. You got to dust yourself and rise."Harbaugh faced nearly 15 minutes of questions about the 49ers' failed plan and execution against the Giants. He did not offer any specifics when asked about the breakdowns.REWIND: Maiocco's Instant Replay: N.Y. Giants 26, 49ers 3
He said the 49ers do not have time to dwell on the mistakes. Harbaugh said the 49ers will review Sunday's game against the Giants "more on paper" rather than studying the game film.
"We're going to have to move on to Seattle," he said. The 49ers (4-2) are in a three-way tie with the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals for first place in the NFC West.STALEY UPDATE: Left tackle Joe Staley, removed from Sunday's game with a concussion, will meet with an independent neurologist Monday, Harbaugh said. His status for Thursday's is in question."Joe will see the neurologist and he'll make that determination," Harbaugh said.If Staley is unavailable, Alex Boone will likely start at left tackle with veteran Leonard Davis filling in at right guard. Boone started the first six games at right guard.
KAEPERNICK PACKAGE: For the third game, the 49ers sprinkled in run-pass threat Colin Kaepernick, the backup quarterback, into the game in place of Alex Smith. But Harbaugh said Kaepernick's involvement is not an indication that the team believes Smith does not give them everything they desire from the starter."We have been using Colin as an added weapon," Harbaugh said. "We feel like we're getting plenty of everything from Alex Smith."Said Smith on Sunday, "When it's working, it's great. It's like everything when we're winning. He's coming in to change up, for the most part. I don't know about (this game). Part of this is that it had been efficient. With Kaepernick going in there, he had been playing well."
UNDERUTILIZED GORE: Frank Gore carried the ball eight times for 36 yards in the first half. He did not carry the ball at all in the second half. The 49ers fell behind by 14 points after the Giants scored on their first drive of the second half. But Harbaugh said the 49ers did not scrap their game plan to go into catch-up mode until after the Giants made it 23-3."Not until we were down the three, late in the third quarter, did we feel we needed to get into the no-huddle tempo to try to maximize our possessions and give yourself enough possession to get the game won," Harbaugh said.
