Kyle Williams: Giants ‘have something that we should've had'

SANTA CLARA -- Quarterback Alex Smith described the 49ers' upcoming game against the New York Giants as "unfinished business."On Tuesday, Kyle Williams said he shares that outlook.
"Yeah, 100 percent," Williams said. "We look at it as they have something that we should've had. So going into it this year, we're going to make sure we don't leave anything like that on the field again this year."In the NFC championship game, Williams committed two turnovers on punt returns that proved costly in the 49ers' 20-17 overtime loss to the Giants, who went on to win the Super Bowl.Williams returned to the 49ers for a full offseason of work and earned his way back onto the roster with a strong training camp. He handled the punt-return chores flawlessly for the first three games of the season. Now, with Ted Ginn Jr. back on the field, Williams returns kickoffs and is the 49ers' No. 3 receiver.And, yes, when the schedule came out in the spring, he said he looked ahead to when the 49ers would play host to the Giants at Candlestick Park."There are a few teams I look forward to," he said. "Of course, after what happened last year, I want to get back at these guys."It's nothing other than any other team that beat us last year -- if the Ravens were on there, we look at Arizona, they beat us last year there. We want to beat them, too. It's not totally out of the ordinary. You want to win every single game."Williams has contributed to the 49ers' 4-1 start. In Week 2, he made a sliding recovery of a late-game kickoff that the Detroit Lions had to recover to have any chance for a late comeback. And on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills, Williams adjusted on a back-shoulder throw from quarterback Alex Smith, turned it back inside and dashed into the end zone for a 43-yard for the first touchdown of the 49ers' 45-3 victory."If you put in all that work in the offseason and you go through the kind of workouts we did as a team, you're definitely going be stronger," Williams said of his offseason training regimen. Williams said he knows he does not have to force the issue and do too much on Sunday against the Giants. He just has to take care of his job."I'm comfortable in the way I approach every single game," Williams said. "I'm comfortable this week going into it. I can't wait. I'm not trying to do too much. We don't need anybody to do too much. Everybody plays their role and does what they need to do. And we'll be fine. We're a great team, everybody together."At the end of last season, Williams returned to action for the playoffs after missing a game due to a concussion. He was inserted to handle punt returns due to Ginn's ankle and knee injuries, which kept him out of action.After the game, Giants players revealed that they knew all about Williams' concussion history. Some said it was a priority to put a hit on Williams. The NFL took no action in the matter.Williams said he never heard anything from Giants players during that game to indicate he was being targeted. And Tuesday he said the topic is nothing worth discussing."It's not something I think was a major focal point for them, just trying to make sure they knocked me out of the game," Williams said. "It sounds stupid when you look back at it. They're playing football. Everybody is going to try to get to the ball and make a play on the ball. That's football. I don't think you need to pay too much attention to anything like that."
