Lions safety fined for hit on Alex Smith

Detroit Lions safety John Wendling, who delivered a right forearm to the nose of a sliding 49ers quarterback Alex Smith on Sunday night, was fined 7,875 by the NFL for unnecessary roughness for a late hit.Wendling was not penalized on the play.The play took place at the end of a 20-yard run. Smith scrambled out of the pocket and gained 20 yards. As Smith went into a feet-first slide, Wendling delivered a forearm to Smith's helmet.Smith sustained a gash on the bridge of his nose. A penalty was called on the play, but it was for a holding penalty assessed against 49ers tight end Delanie Walker."Not dazed. Just bloody," Smith said after the game. "I looked up and saw a flag and though for sure it was a personal-foul call."
