Meet the Rookies — 49ers guard Joe Looney

Football runs in Joe Looneys family. Unfortunately, so do injuries. Looneys father, James, had his football career come to an abrupt end due to an ACL injury. That didnt stop him from encouraging his sons to follow in his footsteps.

My dad played football at the University of Louisville. He was my little league coach growing up, me and my little brother. Looney said, He always pushed us to be in football and we loved it and we jumped on board right away. My dad introduced us to the game and its been a full head of steam from then on.

Looney found a second family from his time with the Demon Deacons and he knows just how important it is to line up next to teammates you can count on.

Its definitely important. Its important you feel like your brother is next to you. Looney said, You know you want to everything for him to win that game so the two of you can come off the field, smiling and cracking a joke or what not. I think I can find that here in San Francisco.

I am just confounded by this incredible opportunity I have to just come in and play with a great team and a great coach.

Nobody is more eager to welcome Looney to the red and gold than Coach Harbaugh who was most impressed with his interview at the combine. He was wowed by his combination of street and book smarts.

As Looney competes for a job this summer, his family will remain at the forefront of his mind. Looney says the first thing he will buy with his NFL pay check is a pick-up truck for his dad.
