Wide receiver Chris Owusu, who joined the 49ers as an undrafted free agent, will sign with the San Diego Chargers' practice squad, agent Steve Caric told CSNBayArea.com on Saturday.Owusu was one of the 49ers' final cuts Friday as the club trimmed to the 53-player roster limit. Owusu cleared waivers but will end up with the Chargers, a team that is not as deep as the 49ers at wide receiver.Meanwhile, the 49ers signed undrafted receiver Nathan Palmer to the practice squad, according to agent Andy Simms.
Palmer caught six passes for 63 yards in the exhibition season. Owusu had five receptions for 43 yards.Owusu, among the top return men in Pac-12 history, was not utilized as a kick returner in 49ers camp until the exhibition game at Denver when he was back deep on two kickoffs that went out the back of the end zone for touchbacks.Owusu, more than likely, was not drafted because of concerns over his history of concussions. The speedster from Stanford remained healthy and never missed a practice while with the 49ers.Also, there were multiple reports that former Stanford center Chase Beeler, who took part in the past two 49ers training camps, would sign with the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad.
