Saints LB says Whitner ‘needs to shut his mouth'

It's been six months since the 49ers and Saints met in a playoff game for the ages at Candlestick Park, but the trash-talking continues as if the teams were still on the field.

No doubt it will continue up to and through their Nov. 25 regular-season matchup in New Orleans.

The latest salvos were fired by 49ers safety Donte Whitner and Saints linebacker Scott Shanle.

Whitner, a former Buffalo Bill, had this to say Monday about the New Orleans' bounty program, which resulted in a one-year ban for head coach Sean Payton:

"If you have the right type of guys in that (defensive) room, you don't have to set bounties or pay money for guys to play physical and play hard," Whitner said. "It's going to come naturally. That's the type of guys we have on our defense."

That brought this response from Shanle on Tuesday, via Twitlonger, which allows people more than 140 characters, when they really need to get something off their chest:

"Guy needs to shut his mouth and mind his own business," Shanle wrote. "Don't remember them winning the superbowl. U still ringless. We got one and working on two now. Try to keep up."

Shanle then followed with this Twitter blast at the 49ers Faithful:

"Alright 49ers fans its been fun but I got 2 get back 2 work. That's something we do in Louisiana so our state isn't bankrupt. Im outta here"
